Lavorazione Murano Art Glass Swan Dish

15 Jun

This is not a large piece, (approx. 6.5″ across). It is in good condition with the original sticker still on it which says ” Lavorazione Murano, Made in Italy”. This type of glass with contrasting coloured layers is called Sommerso.

I think this piece is from a company that used the Murano name but is not actually Murano Glass.   Lavorazione means ‘production’ .  From the research I have done so far, this glass could be from a trading company that made glass in the style of Murano and would have been made in Italy, but not on the Island of Murano.  Apparently there was an awful lot of glass coming out of Italy with stickers like these.

Still a pretty piece but not the real deal.

Found the following information on Wikipedia:

Sommerso (lit. “submerged” in Italian), or “sunken glasses“, is a form of artistic Murano glass that has layers of contrasting colours (typically two), which are formed by dipping a gather of colored glass into another molten glass and then blowing the gather into the desired shape; the outermost layer, or casing, is often clear. Sommerso was developed in Murano during the late thirties and was made popular by Seguso d’Arte in the fifties. This process is a popular technique for vases, and is sometimes used for sculptures.
