Buchan Portobello Scotland Thistleware, Stoneware Coffee Pot & Soup Bowls

23 Jan

Buchan Scotland dishes

Beautifully handmade and handpainted under the glaze stoneware dishes from Buchan Portobello Scotland. The background colour is a beautiful sky blue and the pattern is a thistle amidst heather and bluebells.

The thistle pattern was the most popular of the Buchan Portobello Company patterns, to the point where the goods were known as Thistle ware from 1946 on.  In 1949 the thistle trademark was officially registered and the works were known as the Thistle Pottery until the company closed in 1972.  The company relocated to Crieff from Montebello and continued with the Thistle pattern and a few others until its closure in 1999. Apparently the company was registered again and survived with one lone potter and a single decorator who continue to make the Thistle pattern to this day.

The above information is attributed to the following web site of Portobello Heritage Trust. You can read more information on this pottery company at  http://www.portobelloheritagetrust.co.uk/potterymanufacture.html

These items will be for sale at my booth at the Almonte Antique Market, 26 Mill Street, Almonte ON

Susie Cooper Coffee Set, Parrot Tulip, 1950’s

31 Dec

susie cooper tea pot and cups

Susie Cooper was born in 1902, at Stansfield near Burslem. Her first job was as a paintress for the pottery decorating firm of A.E. Gray at the age of 20.  She wanted more freedom to do her designs and set out on her own at the age of 27 to become an independent pottery producer. Her earlier art deco designs are widely collected and valuable.

The above pattern was designed sometime in 1955 and is called Parrot Tulip.  The shape of the dishes is Quail.  I believe these are decorated using lithographs on bone china.

Unfortunately the coffee pot is damaged beyond repair. there is a huge crack down the back side and one on the front. Only the lid is in perfect condition.  I saved the teapot to show the Quail shape.

The rest of the set will be for sale at my booth at the Almonte Antique Market, 26 Mill Street, Almonte ON which is open 7 days a week all year round.

Set includes 5 demi tasse cups and 5 saucers (one of the cups has a hairline crack) cream and sugar.

Priced at $45 for the cups and saucers and cream and sugar.

Pink 1950’s Mixmaster Junior by Sunbeam

7 Dec

This mid century Mixmaster Junior by Sunbeam works perfectly.  The beaters turn easily and the motor sounds great.  Obviously well used and loved by some baker somewhere, there are lots of scuff marks on the surface but the pink colour is much rarer to come by than the chrome or white.

For sale at my booth at the Almonte Antique Market, 26 Mill Street, Almonte, ON.  Just 30 minutes west of the city of Ottawa.

Priced at $25.00.

Fire King Peach Lustre Dishes, ca. 1950’s to 1963

1 Oct

Fire King Peach Lustre dishes in the Laurel pattern and 3 band pattern.   First made in 1951 and continued production until 1963.  Hard to find in really nice condition as the finish tended to wear off after continued washing.  These are all pristine.  These should never be put in a dishwasher or scrubbed vigorously.  The finish can last quite well with care.

The dinner plates are all sold, but I still have in stock cups and saucers at $5 a set, chili bowls at $8 each, mugs at $6 each, cream and sugar are $5 each. Mini casseroles in the copper tint colour are $3 each. Small dessert bowls are $3 each.

For sale at my booth at the Amonte Antiques Market, 26 Mill Street, Almonte ON, just 30 minutes west of the city of Ottawa.

Pink Formica and Chrome Table ca. 1950’s

1 Oct

We picked up another nice mid century formica table recently. This one has some spots on the chrome legs that are worn, but still a nice table overall.  We replaced the rubber tips on the legs and cleaned up the surfaces.  It does have one extension leaf that goes with it so it would seat six easily.

This table is at my booth at the Almonte Antique Market , 26 Mill Street, Almonte, ON, just 30 minutes west of the city of Ottawa.

The price is $75.00.

Please Note this item is now SOLD!!!

These are very rare and hard to find dishes as they were only produced for 2 years.

I found the following information on a site called ‘Corelle Corner’, which has great information about patterns for Pyrex and Corelle. http://www.corellecorner.com/home.html

Family Flair dinnerware (1957)
There were five patterns to choose from when this coupe-shaped dinnerware was introduced: Field Flower, Pine Cone, Chinese Grass, and Quince which was available in Pink or Yellow.  Within one year Field Flower and Pine Cone were dropped and the remaining patterns were re-named.  Quince became Pink Petal & Yellow Petal, and Chinese Grass became Sea Isle, which is turquoise.

Dinner plates, side plates, saucers and oval platters are patterned, and cups, soup/cereal bowls and oval serving bowls are solid-coloured.  Creamers & sugar bowls are also solid-coloured, but sugar bowl lids are patterned.  Family Flair was sold in 20-piece sets comprising four place settings.  The product line was available for two or three years.
